Course: Environmental education on wildfires

During the years 2023 and 2024 we have carried out the training “Course of Environmental Education for the Prevention of Forest Fires,” in collaboration with the l’Escuela de Ingeniería Agraria y Forestal de la Universidad de León.

The objective has been to reactivate knowledge about the problem of forest fires, and to know and apply tools that allow planning and developing environmental education activities with secondary school students, in the field of forest fire prevention. See last year’s programme here.

Learning and service course

Together with the “Grup de Recerca Ambiental Mediterrània” (GRAM) of the University of Barcelona, we organize the course “Understanding forest fires: sustainable management tools and environmental education”, aimed at students of any level and training, teachers and professionals scope of the course.

The aim of this proposal is to make known what the current problem of forest fires is, and what are the variables to consider to understand the phenomenon. The course includes two field trips to a strategic area managed with prescribed burning and another area managed with extensive livestock.

“Plantando cara al fuego”

We are collaborating with the “Plantando cara al Fuego” project of the University of Santiago de Compostela, providing knowledge on education and educational methodologies so that, from the university level, pedagogical innovation on forest fires is promoted. As part of this project, we have held workshops and participate in the “Grupo ibérico para la educación en incendios forestales” to share, discuss and create joint projects, incorporating the experiences that are carried out in Portugal.

For a few years now we have participated as invited experts to give a session on Fire Ecology, within the “Master’s Degree on Landscape” (MBLANDARCH) of the Barcelona School of Architecture (UPC). We have also participated in invited master’s lectures on using extensive livestock farming to create landscapes adapted to wildfires.
